Mesotherapy is a treatment modality that consists of the multiple and low volume injections of variable mixtures of pharmaceuticals, natural plant extracts, vitamins, trace elements to the intradermal or subdermal space. It was first described by Dr. Michel Pistor in 1952. Since 1970s mesotherapy has been used mainly in the treatment of diseases of musculoskeletal system as osteoarthritis, tendinitis, bursitis and skin diseases as xanthelasma, hyperpigmentation, melasma. Lipolysis, facial rejuvenation and alopecia are among the areas of its recent widespread use. Although concerns to the mesotherapy applications gradually increase, there are few reports about its efficiency and content and concentration of injection solutions. In these studies, some of them suggest that the mesotheraphy is aneffective and safe treatment modality whereas some others are not. Here the mesotherapy procedure is summarized and literature concerning the effects of mesotherapy on lipolysis, facial rejuvenation andalopecia is reviewed and discussed.
