Effects of bottom outlet characteristics on scour during pressurized flushing

Özet

Pressure flushing purges sediment around the bottom outlet, creating a scour hole around the outlet structure. In the present study, the impact of the distances of the outlet center to the base of the channel and the dam wall and the slope of the upstream face on geometric features, such as the length, depth, and volume of the scour hole, was investigated experimentally and numerically. Experimental results indicated that an increase in the densimetric Froude number, the distance between the outlet center and the dam wall, and the angle of inclination of the dam wall resulted in a larger volume of the scour; hence, the amount of the removed sediment. Conversely, increasing the distance from the outlet to the bottom decreases the amount of the sediment removed. Within the studied parameter range, the amount of removed sediment can be increased by 30% with the increase in the clearance between the outlet and the dam wall, by 35% with the increase in the slope of the dam wall, and by 20% with the decrease in the distance between the outlet and the bottom. Furthermore, numerical analyses using the Shields number as a calibration parameter yielded scour hole characteristics that were close to the experimental results.
