The saturation index of erythrocyte membrane lipids (stearate to oleate ratio) was determined by gas-liquid chromatography in lymphoma patients (before and after treatment) and in 30 healthy controls. The ratio of stearic acid/oleic acid (18:0/18:1) in the heathy control group was significantly higher (p<0.001) than the pre-treated lymphoma patients and the same significance existed between the pre-and post treated patients (p<0.001). Although the reason for the persistent changes in stearic acid/oleic acid ratio are not known, and assumed that the factors secreted by tumor makes the cell membrane unstable, such a clear test could have major implications for cancer screening and for monitoring of recurrence and response to treatment.
