Comparative Assessment of Biomass Production and CO₂ Biofixation by Phormidium animale in Synthetic and Natural Culture Media

Özet

The present study investigates the biomass and chlorophyll production and CO₂ biofixation capacity of Phormidium animale cultured in three different media: synthetic BG11 medium, natural water from Lake Mogan, and aquarium water. Cultures were incubated for 15 days under controlled temperature (25° ± 2°C) and light intensity (48 μmol/m²/s). Results showed that the highest biomass accumulation in BG11, reaching an OD₆₀₀ value above 2.025 by day 15. Lake Mogan and aquarium waters also supported growth, with final OD₆₀₀ values around 1.36 and 1.62, respectively. Quantitative analysis showed that BG11 yielded the highest dry weight (0.482 g/L), chlorophyll a concentration (0.924 μg/mL), maximum biomass productivity (0.047 g/Lday), and CO₂ biofixation rate (0.008 mg CO₂/day). However, Lake Mogan water exhibited the highest specific growth rate (0.233 1/day), suggesting that natural waters may enhance growth kinetics despite lower biomass accumulation. These findings demonstrate that while synthetic media optimize biomass and pigment production, natural waters provide growth conditions conducive to faster proliferation. The study highlights the potential of utilizing natural water sources for sustainable microalgal cultivation and CO₂ sequestration applications.
