In this paper, the steady state characteristics of externally pressurized (EP) gas lubricated journal bearings are presented by employing the superposition analysis. In this theoretical analysis, the load capacity and the attitude angles are predicted. A comparison with experiments within the employed range of speed show that the load capacity and the attitude angle are consistent provided an empirical factor of 0.74 is employed. In earlier work, it was suggested that the superposition analysis could be used with success in estimation of stability limits (Fleming, 1970) and it is with a view to studying the stability analysis, to be presented in part II, that the steady state characteristics are presented here in the present paper.
