Özet
Introduction: Reliable bonding to 5Y-PSZ ceramics is crucial for orthodontic treatment, but the effect ofsurface treatments on attachment bond strength remains unclear. The aim of this study is to assess theeffect of different surface treatments on the bond strength of orthodontic attachments applied to 5Y-PSZceramics.
Methods: Eighty 5Y-PSZ ceramic specimens were fabricated and divided into four groups according to sur-face treatments: glaze (G), grinding (Gr), grinding followed by airborne-particle abrasion (Gr+APA), andgrinding followed by airborne-particle abrasion and hydrofluoric acid etching (Gr+APA+HF). Surface rough-ness (Ra) values for the groups were measured. Conventional orthodontic attachments were bonded tothe treated zirconia ceramic surfaces. Then, each surface treatment group was divided into subgroups:control and aging (n=10). Aging was performed using 10000 thermal cycles. The shear bond strength was determined using a universal testing machine. Data were analyzed using ANOVA followed by post hoc mul-tiple comparisons.
Results: Surface roughness significantly differed among groups (P<0.05), with the G group showing thelowest roughness values and Gr producing the highest roughness. Surface treatment and aging significantlyaffected shear bond strength (P<0.05). The highest shear bond strength values were obtained in theGr+APA+HF group, followed by the Gr+APA and Gr, whereas the G group exhibited the lowest values.
Conclusions: Surface treatments and aging protocols are effective in improving the bonding strength oforthodontic attachments to zirconia surfaces, and appropriate surface treatments contribute to the relia-bility of orthodontic treatment.
