In a general sense, sustainable development is defined as a better quality of life both for today and for future generations. It brings economic development, protection of environment and social justice together. The reflections of sustainable development on cities and the aim of creating an urban environment that future generations also benefit have emerged the idea of sustainable cities. Planning by developing and implementing effective strategies with participation of all related actors is a significant step in sustainable urban development. In this study, sustainable city concept and its principles and policies are being discussed and suggestions for the sustainability of Kastamonu case are brought.
