Mercury chloride and lead nitrate are very toxic heavy metals which are widely used and spread in the environment. In the current study, the toxic effects of lead and mercury on liver tissues in rats were evaluated. Lead nitrate (LN, 45 mg/kg of body weight (bw)/day) and mercury chloride (MC, 0.02 mg/kg bw/day) and their mix were administrated orally for 4 weeks. Lipid peroxidation, serum biochemical parameters, antioxidant enzyme activities, and hematological and histopathological changes of liver were observed. Liver function tests, malondialdehyde levels and antioxidant enzyme activities, and certain hematological parameters showed a statistically significant alterations in LN and MC treated groups. Moreover, LN and MC induced severe histopathological alterations. As a result, it was observed that MC provoked more adverse effects than LN in rats.
