© 2022 Elsevier B.V.Two novel compounds [Ni(PQC)2(H2O)2].H2O and [Cu(PQC)2] where PQC = 2–phenylquinazoline–4–carboxylate have been synthesized. Magnetic susceptibility measurements, AAS, FTIR and UV–Vis spectral studies, thermal and elemental analyses were performed for the structural analyses of the synthesized compounds. In addition, X–ray crystallography was performed to elucidate the structure of the Ni(II) complex. The molecular structure of nickel(II) compound consists of one Ni2+, two 2–phenylquinazoline–4–carboxylate, two coordinated and one uncoordinated H2O molecules. In the nickel complex, the Ni2+ coordinates to the two N and O atoms of the two 2–phenylquinazoline–4–carboxylate ions and two O atoms of two water molecules forming an octahedral conformation. The FTIR spectra of nickel and copper complexes reveal that the complexation occurs through both oxygen and nitrogen atoms of 2–phenylquinazoline–4–carboxylate. As a result of electronic spectrum parameters and magnetic susceptibility measurement values, octahedral and tetrahedral geometries have been proposed for the complexes nickel(II) and copper(II), respectively.
