In this paper, an innovative blank holder concept for deep drawing of square cup is presented. The aim is to reduce friction surface between blank and blank holder and to allow material to be orientated/directed more easily among the coils of the spring. The blank holder is designed as rigid flat steel plate on which a tightly wrapped spiral spring is mounted. In addition, a new practical approach related with preparing and installing of the blank has been presented. After the tests, results are found uniform thickness distribution in the cup walls, better material flow and more efficient and long run lubrication. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
