Abstract

LEISURE TIME PERCEPTION OF THE CONVICTS Introduction and Aim: The study aims to determine the leisure time needs of convicts in prison and to reveal the importance of leisure activities in prisons in this direction. Method: The research is a qualitative study and was designed with a phenomenology pattern. Criterion sampling method, one of the purposeful sampling methods, was used to determine the participants to be included in the study. The study group of the research consists of 21 male convicts in Manisa Open Prison. The data of the study were obtained through face-to-face interviews using a semi-structured interview form prepared by the researchers. The obtained data were analyzed by content analysis method. Within the scope of the credibility, transferability, consistency and confirmability of the research; direct quotations were made, the research process was explained in detail, and the compliance rate was calculated as 0.83 using the reliability formula of Miles and Huberman (1994). The data obtained are kept by the researchers. In order to ensure confirmability, the raw data used in the data collection and analysis phase, interview transcripts, notes taken and the coding made for the operations performed in the data analysis are archived and stored. Findings: According to the research findings, the majority of the participants identify the concept of time with the concepts of living and life and define it as the period between birth and death. While the participants defined the concept of freedom as living freely and being with their family / loved ones; it has been determined that he defines the concept of constraints (disability) as being in prison. The majority of the participants describe it as a bad experience when they compare the time they were free with the current situation; it has been determined that if they were not in prison, they would like to spend their leisure time with their families and children, and would rather go to the movies and take a vacation. Conclusion: As a result, it has been determined that time and living freely are important for convicts in prison, leisure time activities are important and it is a method of psychological relaxation for them.
