Teaching The Linguistic Expression of Subjectivity in a French Foreign Language Class

Özet

This study explores a pedagogical experiment aimed at enhancing awareness of the linguistic expression of subjec- tivity in the learning of French as a Foreign Language. The research was conducted within the Department of French Language Education at the Faculty of Education of a public university in Ankara, Turkey. The participants consisted of volunteer students enrolled in their first year of a Bachelor’s degree (undergraduate level) during the first semester of the 2022–2023 academic year, specifically within the framework of the 'Reading Skills I' course. Mixed method was adopted in the research design. In this context, the first part of the research was based on the data obtained from the opinions shared by the students regarding this learning process through a survey consisting of semi-structured questions. The data from this part were examined using thematic content analysis. The second part was based on data obtained from the pre-test and post-test, which included observation and evaluation forms, concerning the detection of subjective expres- sions in reading competence. The data from this second part were analyzed using the SPSS 18 procedure. According to the results, the differences between the pre-test and the post-test showed that the learning acquired during the course increased significantly. The students indicated that this experience helped them to better understand the structural and functional properties of language. It is therefore recommended that the notion of subjectivity, as a component of the theory of enunciation, be included in the process of teaching/learning FLE.
