Fourteen patients with fibromyalgia and 18 healthy controls were included in this study to determine the relationship between insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-I), insulin-like growth factor binding protein-3 (IGFBP-3) and bone resorption. Body mass index (BMI), bone mineral density (BMD), levels of deoxypyridinoline (DPD), IGF-1 and IGFBP-3 were asseyed in all cases. Also, widespread body pain, fatigue, morning stiffness, sleep disorder, the number of tender points, Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQ) and Beck depression scale were evaluated in the patients with fibromyalgia. DPD levels were significantly higher in the patients with fibromyalgia than control groups (p < 0.001). IGF-1 levels were significantly negative correlated with age, BMI, sleep disorder and levels of DPD in the fibromyalgia groups. There was not a significant relationship between IGF-1 and BMD. In conclusion, it was concluded that IGF-1 levels may play an important role on the bone resorption in the patients with fibromyalgia.
