Özet

Objectives:

Translucent multilayer zirconia ceramics with 5 mol% yttria have gained popularity for use in anterior esthetic restorations. Thin restorations can be prepared with these ceramics, and they may require clinical adjustments after cementation, which can affect the surface roughness and gloss of the restoration. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of grinding and subsequent polishing on the surface roughness and gloss of glazed translucent multilayer 5Y-PSZ ceramics.

Methods:

A total of 20 specimens, each 0.4 mm thick, were prepared from a 5 mol% yttria-stabilized zirconia ceramic (5Y-PSZ) and glazed according to the manufacturer’s instructions. The glazed surfaces were ground with a fine-grit diamond bur under water cooling at 200,000 rpm and then polished using a three-step diamond polishing system for three minutes. Surface roughness and gloss values were measured after glazing, grinding, and polishing using a profilometer and a glossmeter, respectively. The data were analyzed using one-way repeated-measures ANOVA and Bonferroni adjustment was used for pairwise comparisons (α=0.05).

Results:

One-way repeated-measures ANOVA showed that glazing, grinding, and polishing significantly affected the surface roughness and gloss values of 5Y-PSZ ceramics (P<0.05). The lowest mean surface roughness value was in the glazing group, while the highest was in the grinding group (P<0.05). The lowest mean surface gloss value was in the grinding group, while the highest was in the polishing group (P<0.05).

Conclusions:

Clinical grinding of glazed 5Y-PSZ ceramics increases roughness and reduces gloss. Therefore, polishing the surfaces of ground 5Y-PSZ ceramics appears to be beneficial for restoring a smoother, glossier surface and may help minimize adverse surface changes associated with clinical adjustments.
