Introduction and Learning Objectives

In this chapter, we shall discuss both the theoretical principles guiding Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP) and how these principles can be transferred to the English language classroom, taking into consideration change and development both at a personal and a professional level. To this end, the chapter first gives background information on the origins of NLP, followed by a brief definition of NLP and then moving onto a discussion of the components of NLP in greater detail in order to create a better understanding of the aims and scope of NLP. The second section of the chapter reviews the philosophy of NLP, focusing on limiting and empowering thoughts. The final section of the chapter provides practical examples of how some of the strategies and techniques may be applied by the learner or teacher on a personal basis and in the language classroom, followed by a conclusion. Some guiding questions and thoughts are offered throughout the text so that you can check your predictions and responses before, during and after reading a particular section. This will help you to monitor your own learning by comparing what you already know with the new concepts that you will read about. When you have finished reading the chapter, you should be able to: 1. understand and explain what is meant by the term NLP; 2. apply the principles of NLP on a personal basis; 3. understand how to become a skilled communicator; 4. apply the techniques and strategies suggested with learners at different levels of language proficiency
