The Death of Smail-aga Čengić is a work written by acclaimed Croatian writer and politician Ivan Mažuranić. Inspired by Croatian folk literature, this epic poem consists of five parts. The subject of the poem is conflict between the renowned Ottoman Montenegrin pasha of Herzegovina, Ismail Čengić Aga, and the Montenegrin people near the village of Grahovo. The poem consists of “The Aga’s Dominion” which describes the main character of Ismail Čengić Aga, “The Night Traveler” in which Montenegrins prepare for revenge, “The Company” in which the vengeful army gathers, “The Harač” in which the tyrant is attacked, and “Fate” in which Ismail Čengić Aga’s fate after death is described. The most remarkable chapters are the “The Aga’s Dominion” and “The Company”. In this paper, it has been translated into Turkish. Mažuranić’s political status, this epic poem has been recognized as an accurate representation of history and has become a source of negative perceptions about Turks. However, history books indicate that Čengić Aga was in fact not an oppressor. This paper is expected to contribute to relevant fields with regard to examining the source of biased and erroneous perceptions of Turks, particularly in Croatia, but also in Balkans.
