In this study; commercial AISI O2 cold work tool steel, which has superior properties such as high
hardness and good toughness combination, high strength and hardenability, was selected as the test
material. Conventional quenching and double quenching heat treatments were applied to AISI O2 cold
work tool steel. Austenitizing processes were carried out at 820 oC for 25 min. Quenching process was
carried out in an oil bath at 100 oC. Double quenched samples were obtained by a second austenitizing
and quenching process on the samples to which conventional quenching process was applied. The effects
of double quenching heat treatment on the hardness of the samples were discussed in relation to the
microstructure. The microstructures of the samples were examined with scanning electron microscope.
Phases and carbides were analyzed with X-ray diffraction. The hardness values of the samples were
measured with Rockwell C scale. Approximately 29% decrease in retained austenite volume fraction
was determined with double quenching. Approximately 5% improvement was achieved with 3 HRC
increase in hardness.
