ABSTRACT
This study was carried out to determine the postoperative comfort conditions of patients who experienced
hypothermia at any stage of the perioperative process, and their feelings and thoughts about the perioperative
process. The research was completed using a qualitative research design with patients who underwent surgery
at a medical faculty hospital affiliated to a state university between July 15 and August 30, 2019 and continued
inpatient treatment in surgical clinics. The research was conducted in an in-depth “individual interview” with
16 patients who voluntarily accepted to participate in the study. Necessary permissions were obtained for the
implementation of the study."Sociodemographic Characteristics Determination Form" and "Semi-Structured
Interview Form" were used to obtain the data. The average age of the patients participating in the study is 53.4.
62.5% of the patients are women; 37.5% of them are men and the total operation time is on average 190 minutes.
Hypothermia was observed in 68.75% of the patients during the surgical process, and no hypothermia was
observed in 31.75%. Patients with hypothermia in the perioperative period develop undesirable changes in both
their physical and psychospiritual conditions and their comfort is negatively affected by this change.
Accordingly, the body temperature of the patients should be carefully monitored by all healthcare teams,
especially nurses, at every stage of the perioperative process, and practices should be made to prevent
hypothermia.
