Özet

Occupation of Izmir by the Greek on May 15, 1919 was a key event which was engraved in the memory of the Turkish Nation and which constituted one of the turning points of Turkish War of Independence. Indeed, occupation of Izmir was the event which 'Turkish Nation reacted most among occupations in the aftermath of Mudros Armistice. Thus, this event can be considered as the catalyzer of the national resistance. Notably as of the occupation date, meetings were held countrywide starting in the urban and rural districts in Western Anatolia in order to protest the occupation and telegraphs of protest were sent from villages, towns and provinces all over Turkey. So, a social mobilization was triggered by telegraph throughout the country. These telegraphs which are the subject matter of this study were wired to Istanbul (to Sultan, Grand Vizier, Ministers of Foreign Affairs and the Interior, and to the Representatives of Entente Powers in Istanbul). This study which is designed to make an analysis on the occupation of Izmir, a significant turning point in our national history contributing to today's social movement studies, will present a novel reading for the current examples in the field and yield concrete data regarding Turkish history of social movements. In this regard, this research, which analyzes telegraphs sent from 14 cities with content analysis, assumes that the spirit emerging from the telegraphs arc the starter of National Struggle movement. As a result, the study reveals the influence of the occupation on the Turkish Nation and the presence of a collective spirit which gives the same reaction throughout the country.
