Act
of designing is a complex interventional process comprising mutual creation of sense
and expression. Throughout the act of designing, material has an apparent
potential to act as a mediator between the sense and the expression. Design
interventions on material entities connect and extend the design space[1]
into the real world. However, to intervene in material things for
representation is to create a disconnection that prevents us from touching the
essence of both the things and the things they represent and exploring their
nature. Although it becomes possible to fabricate designed objects in its own
scale non-representatively along with the developing technologies, the
possibility of encountering and sensing the unknown instantaneous response of
the material to the intervention simultaneously is still limited. In this
sense, this study questions the possibilities of non-representational use of
material in the architectural design studio. It discusses processes of
materialization in the design studio in terms the mutual creation of sense and
expression. It aims to portray an experimental pedagogical approach based on a
poetical way of designerly intervening with the material.
Design
space, as a unity of spatial senses and expressions that precedes and expands
towards architectural space, creates a spatio-temporal structure shaped by
materialization processes. In these processes, direct experiments with the
material itself expand the possibilities of intervention between the
construction of the sense and the expression of the material creating the
space. By making possible the artisan processing inherent in designerly doing,
it opens space for the formation of original insights that allow discussion of
the poetry of the intervention. Discussing the role of material experiments in
shaping design space via the experiential cases of atelierz[2]
which is a vertical architectural design studio in Gazi University, this study
intends to reveal unique traces of design acts occurring in dialog with the
material. The studio works, which are handled in the form of installations and
prototypical models categorized as materials that are familiar to use in space
construction, materials that are unfamiliar to use in space construction, and
new material formations, are examined through design concepts and design artifacts
that are developed in dialogue with the material. The material qualities and the operations
applied to the material are evaluated through the sensual and expressive
expansions they cause in the formation of the space. Thusly an experiential
insight is provided for the forthcoming pedagogical approaches allowing
designerly intervening with the material.
[1] Philippe Boudon considers the concepts of design and design space
as two separate levels in context of architecture. When the design shifts to
the design space that produces itself, it has access to a field of knowledge
that transcends itself and is produced from within it. Boudon establishes this
conceptualization inspired by Gaston Bachelard's "space under space".
According to Bachelard, the space in everyday life is different from the space
that is established in order to understand the space in everyday life. As Henry
Poincare explains, established space is the deitic space of the concrete space.
In this study, with reference to Boudon, the concept of design space is defined
as the unity of the interventionable creation mediums that priotize and expand
towards the architectural space.
