Özet

Dredging is defined as the excavation activity carried out for any reason on the sea and coastal floor and river mouths. Dredging material generated as a result of dredging operations carried out for maintenance in existing ports/shipyards in Turkey and for ground consolidation in ports/shipyards planned for construction is largely disposed of by dumping it back into the sea. It is aimed to evaluate which of the ten types of beneficial use methods used worldwide will be more suitable for the dredging material generated after the dredging process carried out in ports and shipyards. Comparisons were made using the data of dredging projects for which EIA Positive decision was given by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change and published by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change and the most appropriate beneficial use option for the facility was determined. It is concluded that the dredging projects do not contain pollution according to Cadmium (Cd), Lead (Pb), Arsenic (As), Chromium (Cr), Copper (Cu), Nickel (Ni), Zinc (Zn), Mercury (Hg) and Total PCB parameters and the physical composition of the dredging materials is dominated by clay and silt content. It was concluded that dredging materials can be used as a backfill cover layer in solid waste disposal sites, used for coastal protection operations, backfilling in abandoned mines and used in ceramic/brick production. Since dredging material can be utilized both as a resource and has economic value, it should be encouraged to be managed with beneficial use methods and national/international legislations should be amended accordingly.
