Pigmented villonodular synovitis is a rare benign condition of unknown etiology. It represents a part of a disease spectrum that includes giant cell tumor of the tendon sheath and is regarded as a more diffuse and intra-articular form. Recurrence is common after surgery. A 24-year-old woman's recurrent lesion in the right ankle region, which was operated on and diagnosed as giant cell tumor of the tendon sheath 6 years previously, was diagnosed as pigmented villonodular synovitis after our current operation. In this paper, we present a review of the diagnostic, therapeutic and follow-up properties of this rare condition.
