The Reflection of Folk Wisdom into Turkish Language at The Markets and Bazaars

Özet

Marketplaces have taken an important place in the lifes of societies throughout the human history. For ages, elements of oral culture have been encountered in the marketplaces where various products are sold and exchanged. Marketeers use these elements for various reasons such as praising the products they sell and attracting people's attention. What are frequently seen in these samples are rhymes, exaggerated expressions, similes, personifications and sayings based on alliterations. The deep images and intuitional expressions of folk culture in these aforementioned expressions immediately attract attention. In this article, various expressions which are used in the markets and bazaars and which are mostly oral were discussed. Many of the examples were collected through observations and interviews in the markets and bazaars in Ankara, Aydin, Denizli, Izmir, Balikesir, Nigde. The collected examples are handled individually and in groups according to their subjects, the qualifications of the language used in the markets and bazaars was tried to be revealed. Furthermore, the aforementioned samples were evaluated in terms of meaning and various communication situations. While analyzing the samples, the issues identified during the observation and interviews were explained in order to reveal clearly why and how these expressions were used. The aim of this study is to identify the samples related to the subtleties and the power of Turkish language, to share these elements with the readers, and to attract public attention to these subtleties of public wisdom that are especially encountered in the elements of oral culture at the marketplaces. This study is essential in terms of raising awareness about our elements of oral culture among Turkish people of all ages.
