The aim of this study is to develop a computer-controlled, hydraulically actuated system and computer program for profile turning by using conventional lathes. The system which consists of a computer, a data acquisition and control board, a hydraulic cylinder, a servovalve, a servoamplifier, an encoder and two position transducers is mounted on a TEZSAN MAS165 model universal lathe. A base block which carries the hydraulic cylinder, transducer, servovalve and the cutting tool block mounted on a balled slide bearing is placed on the carriage. Desired profile is prepared with a computer program easily and is given to the system as a reference input. The program also operates the system. Experiments have shown that the system can process complex profiles on a universal lathe successfully.
