Due to the structural changes experienced in electrical power systems in recent years, the size of the system is increasing day by day and the equivalent models using for representing the system are being more complex. This advance makes it more important to develop reduced equivalent models that can represent the power system in detail. Therefore, this paper focuses on the reduction of a power system by using extended static REI model. As the case study, IEEE 39 Bus New England model is simulated in Power Factory Digsilent and it is seperated to 4 different regions in order to show how a power system can be reduced. Thanks to the applied method, a reduction of 48% in the number of busbars, 29% in the number of lines, 50% in the number of generator models and 63% in the number of load models is achieved. Furthermore, the proposed method has a considerably low error rate as 1.54% on average in the load flow of 6 transmission boundary lines, which are determined as connection lines between 4 regions and included in the original model.
