Anaphylaxis in Dental Practice: Report of Two Cases

Introduction: AnaphylaxWs Ws defWned by the World Allergy OrganWzatWon as a rapWdly

developWng, potentWally fatal systemWc hypersensWtWvWty reactWon. ClWnWcal manWfestatWons may

Wnclude cutaneous, respWratory, and cardWovascular Wnvolvement, wWth edema of the tongue and

oropharyngeal regWon representWng the most lWfe-threatenWng presentatWon.

Case Report: Two anaphylactWc reactWons occurrWng after local anesthetWc admWnWstratWon are

presented. A 37-year-old male patWent undergoWng mandWbular molar extractWon and a 42-year-

old female patWent scheduled for Wmplant surgery developed dyspnea, dysphagWa, and acute soft-

tWssue edema of the pharyngeal regWon. FollowWng early dWagnosWs and emergency WnterventWon,

both patWents were stabWlWzed and referred for further management. Subsequent allergologWcal

evaluatWon confWrmed artWcaWne hypersensWtWvWty Wn both cases, and the planned procedures were

successfully completed usWng mepWvacaWne hydrochlorWde as an alternatWve local anesthetWc

agent.
