Özet

Background: Nutriepigenetics provides a molecular basis for understanding the role of nutrition in the prevention and treatment of disease throughout life. With the introduction of the term nutriepigenetics into our lives, the importance of genetic tests and nutrition according to genes has begun to be understood. Studies have shown the effects of many dietary factors, including polyphenols and flavonoids, on DNA methylation, an important component of epigenetics. Resveratrol, one of these nutraceuticals, has been used extensively in research in recent years as it has numerous therapeutic benefits, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anti-carcinogenic effects. Objective: It is aimed to reveal the role of resveratrol in the prevention and treatment of diseases through epigenetic mechanisms. Methods: In this review, articles about Resveratrol were searched from databases (Pubmed, ScienceDirect) and studies on epigenetic mechanisms, nutrigenetic and nutriepigenetic effects of resveratrol were given priority. Results: It is thought that resveratrol can modulate epigenetic patterns by directing enzymes that catalyze DNA methylation and histone modifications, and may prolong life indirectly, especially since they provide stabilization of DNA with the activation of sirtuins from NAD+ dependent histone deacetylase enzymes. Additionally, resveratrol shows strong chemopreventive activity against tumor formation by inhibiting CYP1A1, one of the Phase I enzymes responsible for detoxification, while activating CYP1A2 supports the removal of toxic chemicals in the body and the proper and balanced functioning of hormone and metabolic activities. It has also been shown to induce glutathione S-transferase and phase II detoxification enzymes. Conclusions & Discussion: Resveratrol has an important role in the prevention and treatment of disease, however, considering the effects on detoxification enzymes, individuals should be evaluated according to genetic test results within the framework of precision medicine, and nutritional and supplementary recommendations should be presented with a nutriepigenetics approach.
