Abstract
Azerbaijan has
been the homeland of the Oghuz Turks since time immemorial. The first state of
the Oghuz Turks was the Türgish State, founded in 690 on the Tanrı Mountains.
After the Türgish State was dissolved in 766, the Oghuz landed around the Aral
Lake and founded the Oghuz Yabgu State in 776. The capital of this state is
Yenikent, which is located on the edge of the Aral Lake. The Oghuz Yabgu State
was destroyed in 1042 after ruling for 266 years. Before the destruction of the
Oguz Yabgu State, the Great Seljuk State was established in 1037. The Great
Seljuk State first conquered the southern region of the Aral Lake and the
vicinity of the Caspian Sea. Later, he expanded his territory to the west. He
added Khorasan, Istan, Iraq, Syria and Anatolia to his territory in a short
time. The Oghuz who remained in the place of the Oghuz Yabgu State founded the
modern-day Republic of Turkmenistan. But the main activities of the Great
Seljuk State are on the western side. Sultan Alp Arslan added Azerbaijan to the
Seljuk Empire from 1054. Sultan Melikshah appointed Emir Savtegin governor of
Azerbaijan in 468 (1075-76). After the collapse of the Seljuk State, Turkish
states were established in Azerbaijan under various names. As a result, the
Azerbaijani region literally became the homeland of Oghuz. The Oguzs who
settled here also founded the modern Republic of Azerbaijan. The Oghuz people
who came further west also conquered Anatolia and founded the modern Republic
of Turkey.
