Turkey is a country where active plate motions are frequent because it is located on the
Alpine Himalaya belt. The experienced earthquakes cause both sociological and economic
damage and from time to time trigger other disasters. These secondary disasters
increase the loss of life and property more. Within the scope of the study, secondary
natural disasters caused by earthquakes were examined, and samples that caused
destruction or loss from earthquakes with magnitudes of 5 and above, which could be
exemplary in Turkey, were investigated. According to the literature and sample disasters
investigated, it was determined that natural disasters such as landslides, avalanches,
tsunamis and floods were among the leading disasters occurring after earthquakes.
Based on this fact, disaster maps published by the relevant public institutions in Turkey
and other sources in the literature were considered as the main component of the
method. The disaster maps obtained were overlapped, and the provinces with high risk of
earthquakes were presented in tables, and the risk densities of secondary disasters were
identified on the tables. As a result, measures were put forward for earthquake-induced
secondary disasters that need to be considered throughout Turkey, especially in the
provinces where risk densities were determined. The study is a first in terms of
identifying these measures and concentrating new research on this area.
