The behaviour of 99.999% aluminium in 0.01, 0.1 and I mol dm(-3) of NaOH has been studied using linear polarization and potentiodynamic methods. The surface films formed on aluminium in dilute alkaline solutions are found to be thicker and probably hydrated. With increasing concentrations of NaOH, the film grows thinner due to its dissolving effect. Also, at high concentrations the results show the probable formation of a porous like Nm. A reaction order of 0.5 is estimated.
