In this study, the effect
of Al and AlTiB (0, 2.5, 5, 10 and 15 wt%)
on the microstructure and mechanical
properties of a MgZnSn based alloy were investigated. The alloys were produced
under a controlled CO2 atmosphere by a green sand casting process.
The results show that the addition of Al and AlTiB alloys modified the
structure and decreased the grain size. The results of hardness and tensile
testing indicate that the hardness and tensile properties of MgZnSn alloy
increased by adding AlTiB and then is relatively constant with decreasing grain
size. But, different result is also observed in the alloys containing Al. The
hardness and tensile properties of MgZnSn alloys decreased with increasing Al alloying
elements up to 5 wt% due to increasing coarse eutectic areas. On the other
hand, the hardness and tensile properties of MgZnSn alloys increased with
increasing AlTiB alloying elements up to 15 wt% due to decreasing grain size.
