Rumex species have been examined for their effects on gastrointestinal functions. R. alpinus L. and R. crispus L. found most potent in intestinal motility studies, together with some purgative drugs, were further investigated for their effects on the formation of histamine and prostaglandin-like material (PG-lm) by rat intestine in vivo. The results show that the Rumex species possess some laxative effect due at least in part to increased intestinal production of histamine and PG-lm. © 1988 Informa UK Ltd All rights reserved: reproduction in whole or part not permitted.
