Özet

21st century learning and teaching is being shaped by digitalization (Ng, 2012); therefore, this trend is readily evident in English as a foreign language learning, too. This study focuses on the possible opportunities and drawbacks of using a Web 2.0 tool-Edmodo as the digital writing portfolio tool based on the data collected via semi-structured interviews and online written interview forms before the Covid19 pandemic and during the pandemic online language education process. The reason why the focus is on writing skill is that providing each learner in the traditional and online classes with quality feedback in real time may not be possible because checking each and every student’s writing on paper takes much time and students cannot learn from each other’s mistakes because they usually do not read other peers’ pieces of writing. However, getting the students do the writing tasks on Edmodo not only saved and extended teacher’s feedback time on students’ writing but also facilitated self and peer-assessment because the students could read and comment on each others’ works online. Their responses revealed positive contributions of this experience to their learning; e.g. self-assessment, peer-assessment, higher motivation to do the writing tasks, improvement in language areas; e.g., grammar, spelling, vocabulary. Some also stated that writing on Edmodo made them anxious because many people were to read their writing.
