We aimed to assess occurrence and antibiotic resistance of enterococci in the raw milk sold in dairy farms. In total,177 enterococci were isolated from 78 raw milk samples. Enterococcus faecalis (54.2%) and E. faecium (29 %) were the most common species. E. durans (6.2 %), E. hirae/dispar (5 %), E. gallinarum groups (3 %), E. mundtii (2.2 %) and E. raffinosus (0.5 %) were rare. In vitro activity of 13 different antibiotics against Enterococcus species was investigated by Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method. Resistance to oxacillin, streptomycin and erythromycin was high (95, 97 and 86%, respectively). Resistance to vancomycin and teicoplanin was detected in 48 and 52% for E. faecalis and in 26% and 33% for E. faecium, respectively. In conclusion, raw milk samples can be contaminated by enterococcal species. E. faecalis and E. faecium are the most common isolates. Prevention of vancomycin resistant enterococci (VRE) contamination of foods is important to prevent such infections.
