Derivative UV spectrophotometric method for the simultaneous determination of ambroxol and preservatives in different types of syrups has been proposed. Determination of ambroxol in pediatric syrups and syrups was performed at the wavelengths of 265 and 256.4 nm (n = 5), respectively. The concentration of ambroxol in standard solutions, used for calibration, ranged from 33.0 to 88.0 mu g mL(-1). The proposed method provided the accuracy of 99.73% +/- 0.76 for pediatric syrups and 98.8% +/- 1.09 for other syrups. Standard deviations for both types of syrups were also very low. The proposed derivative UV spectrophotometric method was also applied to the determination of paraben in syrup and benzoic acid in pediatric syrup, at the wavelengths of 277.2 (n = 5) and 244.6 mn (n = 5), respectively. In these determinations ambroxol was not interfering. Calibration plots were linear in the range of 5.0-15.5 mu g mL(-1) for benzoic acid and 4.0-12.0 mu g mL(-1) for paraben.
