The surface spreading technique for synaptonemal complexes was applied to both diploid and C1 autotetraploid æLathyrus sativusæ and æL. tingitanus.æ While leptotene chromosomes have single axial corses, zygotene chromosomes showed tripartite SC formation. In æL. sativusæ, pairing begins predominantly in distal segments but some early iterstitial pairing was also detected. Relative axial lengths of early prophase bivalents are in close agreement with those of mitotic length. Mean haploid axial lengths differ in æL. sativusæ and æL. tingitanusæ but in proportion to the difference in genome size. As in other species of flowering plants, an average of about 1 μm is added to axial length for each 4.4 mm of DNA. A single synaptic exchange was observed in most quadrivalents of C1 autotetraploid æL. sativusæ and æL. tingitanusæ. © 1995 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
