Protonation constants of some substituted salicylideneanilines have been determined in ethanol-water mixtures at ionic strength of 0.1 M and at 25 degrees C. A potentiometric method was used and calculation was done by Martell's and Motekaitis' PKAS computer programme. The trend in the values of protonation constants of Schiff's bases were explained in terms of the nature of the substituent and the dielectric constant of medium. The applicability of the Hammett equation to the effect of substituents in Schiff's bases is discussed.
