Özet
Abstract: Borax decahydrate (Na₂B₄O₇·10H₂O) is the most common commercial form of the element boron and is both an industrial raw material and a strategic compound studied for its effects on biological systems. It is an inorganic sodium borate salt that is commonly found in nature in the form of tincal ore. It is formed by refining the tincal mineral from its powdered or crystalline structure. Borax decahydrate is commonly used in agriculture, healthcare, cleaning, and various industrial sectors. The main aim of this study is to investigate the antioxidant potential of borax decahydrate using the DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl) radical scavenging activity assay. The test is widely used to evaluate the antioxidant capacity of a substance, and it is based on the principle that the purple-colored DPPH radical changes color when it interacts with antioxidant compounds present in the sample being tested. Five different concentrations of borax decahydrate (2.5, 5, 10, 20, and 40 µg/mL) were treated with DPPH solution in a well plate. Gallic acid (25 μg/mL, 50 μg/mL, 100 μg/mL), a well-known antioxidant, was used as a positive control. At the end of the experiment, all the samples were rapidly and spectrophotometrically measured for absorbance at 517 nm wavelength. Radical scavenging activity of the samples was calculated as percentages compared to the control. As a result, no significant antioxidant activity was detected under the tested concentrations (2.5- 40 µg/mL) of borax decahydrate compared to the control. The highest inhibition value of the radical scavenging activity of borax decahydrate was shown at 20 μg/mL (23.19 %), and the least inhibition at 2.5 μg/mL (5.07 %). Gallic acid (GA), which is a known antioxidant and is used as a positive control, had inhibition values of the radical scavenging activity at 25 μg/mL, 50 μg/mL, and 100 μg/mL (74.22 %; 74.12 % and 75.26 %, respectively). In conclusion, the findings clearly demonstrate that borax decahydrate did not exert a remarkable antioxidant activity at the tested concentrations by the DPPH radical scavenging assay. This finding needs to be supported by other antioxidant studies.
