Özet

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) consume large amounts of electric energy mainly due to artificial aeration process by blowers. The objective of this study is to show the benefits of the installation of a biogas and hydro turbines at existing wastewater treatment plants. This could be an alternative feasible clean energy source to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere. In this context, the energy recovery data of the Tatlar wastewater treatment plant in Turkey have been analyzed. The findings of the case study revealed that by using biogas and hydro energy, the energy recovery efficiency of wastewater treatment plant can exceed 90% based on the seasonal conditions. The combined renewable electric production is estimated to avoid the emission of more than 60,000 tons CO2e per year. Those energy-related technological solutions can make considerable contributions to sustainable wastewater treatment plant development.
