Political rights in social studies textbooks in Turkish elementary education

Abstract

Social Studies Textbooks are major instructional tools playing an important role about human rights in Elementary Education in Turkey. The purpose of this study is to determine the level of allocation of "Political Rights" issues in elementary Social Studies Textbooks. In accordance with this purpose, four social studies textbooks from Turkey were examined. In the research, the analysis unit is "the Political Rights". This analysis unit is divided into three sub-categories as "Individual Freedom", "Participation", and "Democracy". The research was carried out using survey design. Content analysis, a qualitative research technique, was used. The analysis of the data was carried out by calculating frequency, and percentage. As a result, it was observed that politics rights issues are included in Turkish textbooks. The study showed that Turkish textbooks contain the "participation" subcategory the most frequently.
