Self-assessment of students' writing skills is essential in language education since it allows
students to actively evaluate their own writing and pinpoint sub-skills that need development.
The main goal of this action research is to determine how students perceive the significance of
self- assessment of their writing skills. The data were collected through an interview given to 22
participants and analyzed quantitatively. The participants were asked to write a paragraph and
grade their own paragraphs. Later, they were asked to reflect on this self-evaluation process. The
major elements that participants discussed throughout the interview were highlighted by the
descriptive codes. Based on the analysis of the interview data, a number of themes on the
benefits of self- assessment in the improvement of students' writing abilities have come to light.
Reflective thinking, providing and receiving feedback, motivation, evaluating one's own
strengths and weaknesses, self-awareness, and focusing on particular areas are themes drawn
from the data.
