ABSTRACT
Ahmed Yesevî is one of the most renowned figures in the Turkic world. He
was born in Sayram or Turkistan, which is now part of Kazakhstan. According to
tradition, he taught to more than ten thousand students. He passed away in 1166
in Turkistan, where his mausoleum is located. His students dispersed throughout
the Turkic world, enlightening people everywhere. Given his significance, there
has been great curiosity about his lineage and life. To describe his lineage, a
Nesebname was written in Arabic. This Nesebname was translated from Arabic to
Chagatai Turkic by Mevlana Safiyyuddin Koylaki in 1291. The translated version
gained significant importance over time, being handwritten and distributed
widely. This work, detailing Ahmed Yesevî's lineage and life, is an important
document in the history of the Turkish language as it was penned in the 13th
century. Between 680 and 1291, significant events occurred in Turkistan and its
surroundings. During Ahmed Yesevî's time, the region was tumultuous. Sayram,
Turkistan, and neighboring areas experienced surprises daily during the 11th
century. This region was a battleground for the Karahanid, Oghuz Yabgu, Seljuk,
Khwarazmian, and Ghaznavid empires, with five Turkish states constantly at war.
However, there are scarce documents describing these events. Therefore, the
events, place names, and personal names mentioned in the Nesebname are
invaluable sources for historical study. Recognizing this, we sought to
introduce the Ahmed Yesevî Nesebname and share its historical significance with
the academic community.
