Özet
This review critically examines the corrosion mechanisms of fluoride- and chloride-based molten salts, which are of central importance to the development of Generation IV nuclear reactor systems, and comparatively evaluates their interactions with structural materials. The study aims to synthesize the current state of knowledge on the principal factors governing corrosion in these two salt families, with particular emphasis on their thermochemical behavior, impurity sensitivity, and material compatibility. The review shows that in fluoride-based systems, corrosion phenomena such as the selective dissolution of chromium can be mitigated more effectively owing to the availability of extensive experimental databases and relatively well-established redox control strategies. By contrast, although chloride-based salts offer significant neutronic advantages for fast-spectrum reactor applications, their corrosion behavior remains considerably more uncertain, and the formation of protective oxide layers is generally ineffective in providing passivation under such conditions. Overall, the findings highlight that salt purity is the most decisive parameter controlling corrosion in both fluoride and chloride media, and therefore represents a key challenge for the reliable deployment of molten salt reactor technologies.
