The effects of the subinhibitory concentrations of penicillin, cefazolin, cefotaxime, and clarithromycine, which were known to be effective to Streptococcus pyogenes, on the ability of the adherence of S.pyogenes to epithelial cells were investigated. Three different. S. pyogenes strains, isolated from throat cultures of patients, were included in this study. The strains were identified by API 20 STREP. The effects of the subinhibitory concentrations (1/10 concentrations of the MIC values) of penicillin G, cephazolin, cefotaxime, and clarithromycine on the adherence of the S.pyogenes strains to HEp-2 cells were examined. After being exposed to the subinhibitory concentrations of penicillin G, cefazolin, and cefotaxime, the ability of adherence of the S.pyogenes strains were inhibited. However, clarithromycine had no statistically significant effect. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of certain antibiotics to the ability of streptococcal adherence, which was known as one of the most important virulence factors of S.pyogenes. Investigation of the factors affecting the adhesion properties of S.pyogenes may be beneficial for the prevention and control of the infectious diseases.
