Abstract

Naming is important as it reflects the social and cultural identity and is an area that more than one discipline is interested in. In Alaouite belief system, names are accepted as personal descriptions. From this fact, in this study it is aimed to identify the names that are alive, preferable, non-preferable and unused in Alaouite culture. Although it remains in the same structure in Turkish society, naming in Alewism and Bektashiyya in linguistic and cultural terms has a unique style. This study is carried out with 21 Alaouite Leaders and suitors from 17 different families. In the study, focus group interview is used as a qualitative research method and the data is collected through the Naming Culture in Alewism. Recording of data took place through voice and video recording. As a result of the study, it is seen that there has been a social stratification in preferred names in Alaouite belief system between 1950 and 2012, however the names of 12 Imams are preferred in every period. One of the data obtained from the study is that, names which are considered to be unused and/or nonpreferred in Alaouite belief system are the results of historical conficts but in 21st century these names are also started to be used in Alaouite society.
