A parametric study to optimize the temperature of hazelnut and walnut shell gasification for hydrogen and methane production

In this study, hazelnut and walnut shells were gasified with steam in a lab-scale updraft fixed bed reactor. Operating temperature effects on syngas composition were investigated experimentally. It is aimed to optimize the temperature of gasification for producing hydrogen and methane gases. Gasification was carried out at 600 degrees C, 650 degrees C, 700 degrees C, 750 degrees C and 800 degrees C. The experimental results showed that the amount of hydrogen content in syngas increased with increasing temperature but amount of methane content decreased during both fuels' gasification. The optimum gasification temperatures of hazelnut and walnut shells were obtained as 750 degrees C and 800 degrees C for producing hydrogen in syngas, respectively. On the other hand, lower gasification temperatures than 700 degrees C favored the methane content instead of hydrogen in syngas. Optimum temperature for methane production from hazelnut shells was obtained as 600 degrees C and for walnut shells was obtained as 650 degrees C. These findings make it possible to arrange the required composition of desired syngas content for different usage areas like hydrogen/methane utilization or chemicals production.
