Residual stresses have considerable influence on the strength, tolerance and performance of the component. Because of this, their types and values have to be known. In this study, a gear wheel manufactured from carburized AISI 5115 steel was used. Residual stresses at the root of the gear have been investigated by layer removing method. It was found that residual stresses are compressive at the root of the gear.
