Aim: This study was conducted to determine the prevalence of
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) among adult survivors one year after the
Kahramanmaraş earthquake and to examine the relationship between the
development of PTSD and the variables of psychological resilience and meaning
in life.
Materials and Methods: The sample of this cross-sectional analytical study
consisted of 307 adults placed in social housing after the earthquake. Data
were collected using a personal information form, the Meaning in Life
Questionnaire, the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, and the DSM-5
Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Checklist. The Mann-Whitney U test, the
Kruskal-Wallis H test, and the Spearman correlation analysis were used to
analyze the data. The significance level was set at p<0.05 for all analyses.
Results: The mean total score for meaning in life among adults
was 49.27 (SD=9.94), the mean total score for psychological resilience
was 24.89 (SD=7.52), and the mean total score for post-traumatic
stress disorder was 43.42 (SD=19.40). The prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder
was 43.64%. According to the Spearman correlation analysis, a statistically
significant, weak positive correlation was found between meaning in life and
psychological resilience (r = 0.283; p < 0.001). Furthermore, no significant relationship
was found between meaning in life and post-traumatic stress disorder (r=0.002; p=0.966) or between
psychological resilience and post-traumatic stress disorder (r=-0.055; p=0.336).
Conclusion: Research findings indicate that approximately half of
adults who experienced the Kahramanmaraş earthquake have PTSD. Meaning in life
scores are slightly above average, while psychological resilience scores are
average. Based on these results, it is recommended that support programs be
developed to support adults' mental health and reduce the long-term negative
effects of the earthquake.
