Abstract

Even though academic conferences play an important role in advancing science, they have been a relatively under researched area. This paper developed two reliable, valid, comprehensive scales to measure academic conference performances (ACP) in China. Based on a literature review and expert opinion, two scales were developed; one that examined the organizers' perspective (25 + 30 items), and the other that examined the attendees' perspective (31 items); which were empirically tested using data collected from social science academic conference organizers and attendees in China. It was found that there were six main academic conference performance dimensions; resources (input); operations (processes); content (output); attendees (outcome); finances (outcome) and growth (growth); and 15 specific factors. This research was the first to explore the dimensions of academic conference performances in China from organizer and attendee perspectives.
