In insects, tympanal organs play an important role
in behaviors such as communication, defense,
sexual selection, site selection, protection, and
communication with each other and with the
environment. Tympanal organs are usually
identified by the presence of a tympanal
membrane. The aim of this article is to give
information about the structure of the abdominal
ear organs in Pyralidae. In the study, the tympanal
structures of 4 species belonging to the
subfamilies Pyralinae and Phycitinae were
examined comparatively. Diagnostic features of
the studied ear organs of Synaphe consecratalis
(Pyralinae), Pyralis regalis (Pyralinae),
Dioryctria sylvestrella (Phycitinae) and Pempelia
alpigenella (Phycitinae) are given.
